Central to our Being

Through illustration of an intricate puzzle, this artwork explains that for 65000+ years, Country always was and always will be central to our being. Each interconnected piece, representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, our nations, kinship, identity, culture, lore, voice, knowledge, ingenuity, land management and our integrity, is essential to our wholeness and our existence.

Over the past 250 years, several pieces of the puzzle have been detached, shifted, mislaid and lost. These pieces of our Nation’s history must be restored and truthfully fixed into the discourse of the Nation’s narrative where they belong. Fundamentally, our longstanding knowledge of Country, climate and our environment is a crucial piece to embed in these changing times and for the futures of our children.

At the heart of the puzzle, under the concrete and buildings, through the land, waters, skies and the stars, our sovereignty to this Country, our traditional, ancestral and home lands, was never ceded. Always was, always will be.
